Being There

I like Being There.

Being There is an aged movie (made in 1979) starring Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine. Despite the production date, it's not one of those films which get old with time.

The story in Being There goes as follows:

Chance is an elderly gentleman who lives in the house he has always lived. In fact, he has never been outside the boundaries of the house his whole life. He expertly tends the garden and likes to watch television.

When the owner of the house dies, attorneys tell Chance to leave. He prepares to leave and takes his first few steps into the world outside.

After a minor car accident, he meets Eve Rand, who acknowledges Chance the gardener as Chauncey Gardiner. Eve's husband, Mr. Benjamin Rand is a man of extreme financial and political wealth - approaching the end of his life. Through Mr. Rand, Chauncey even meets the president and impresses him (and everyone else) with his insights.

Chance is a simple man, but not a simpleton. He knows what he knows clearest (gardening), and he uses that to answer others people's questions to their satisfaction.

His core of clarity touches people around him.

Chauncey is not only clear, but transparent: people look through him and see things they assume - but with the balance from Chance's presence.

Being There is a beautiful movie.

Go watch Being There!
