Dofus

I like Dofus.

Dofus is a cute tactical MMORPG; reminds me of good old times when turn-based strategies ruled and real-time was science fiction.

What got me interested in Dofus is that Dofus is based on Flash. I haven't seen a massively multiplayer game developed in Flash before, and I was quite curious how it turned out.

Now that I've seen it, I believe Flash-based tactical MMORPGs have potential.

But how do things stand with Dofus?

Well, the good things are good, and the bad things aren't outright bad, but simply lacking.

The Dofus world and characters are cute, and tactical combat is fun. The crafting and trade systems are elaborate, and the economy is well integrated with the world.

Quests are not very rewarding; you may just ditch them altogether.

Dofus doesn't seem to have an epic story arching over the entire world, but more like bits and pieces jumbled up in a lucky combination.

There are plenty of funny references like "Tragic: The Gardening" or one of the character classes being named Osamodas (read it backwards).

The English text (Dofus is originally a French game) is full of errors. Strangely, this seems to add to the atmosphere instead of detracting from it.

The trial region (Dofus is free to play in the trial region) teems with life and is fun to explore, but in comparison, the world outside seems bland and empty.

Give Dofus a try; it's cute, it's free and it doesn't take long to download.

(I'm looking forward to see how Ankama Games will fare with their new PvP only game: Dofus Arena. The graphics are great, and if they manage to pull off the balance and ladders/rewards just right... I hope it will be a good game.)
