Weeds

I like Weeds.

Weeds is a charming series about... well... weeds.

First of all, I like the theme song. Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds is a wonderful song with interesting lyrics. (Hint: It's about people made out of ticky tacky, being put into boxes and coming out all the same.)

The title is fitting as well as the theme song. Weeds is not only about Cannabis Sativa, but also the ability of weeds in general to survive and flourish in strange places.

In the suburban community of Agrestic, people clothe their personalities in rustic weeds in hope to preserve a fantasy normality and an illusion of sophistication.

Nancy Botwin, the main character, is wearing widow's weeds due to her husband's untimely death.

Nancy, a single mother with two children, wishes to maintain her lifestyle, and to achieve that, she begins dealing weed unbeknownst to her family. Business seems to be going well, and she is working on extending her territory.

The situation allows for a nice unfolding of the story. The characters are charming and loveable, each with a unique aspect.

For example, Nancy's younger kid Shane (nicknamed "Strange Botwin"), does strange things; like making a video in which he holds a neighbouring girl hostage and makes demands to infidels. He also manages to build up a reputation which allows him win a match in martial art contest without a single hit. Very cute and impressive.

Thankfully, Weeds, unlike other movies which have drugs in it, doesn't feature fearsome battles against evil. There are no hero cops beating up everyone in their way or gangs which make extensive use of firearms.

Weeds is definitely an interesting series.

Go watch Weeds!
